{what’s on your plate?} fit friday with erica

 I am an avid runner and although I hate waking up in the early hours to exercise – I love the way I feel when I do. Although it is essential to keep our bodies moving as part of our health about 80% of our weight is contributed to what it is we are putting in our mouths.
So what are you putting into your mouth? What does your plate look like? I don’t know about you but for me it’s usually somewhat easy to eat healthy for breakfast, lunch, and snacks. It’s when dinner and those hours before bedtime roll around that I tend to want to eat more or maybe just more unhealthy.
One of my sure fire ways to keep my eating on track for dinner is to:
 1. Eat on a small plate (and to make it seem like I’m not ‘different’ everyone in the family eats off a small plate as well)
2. If I’m still wanting more – I only get seconds of the vegetables
 3. Keep it looking like this: 1/2 veggies, 1/4 lean protein, 1/4 carbohydrate
If you can follow those simple steps then it doesn’t matter if what I’m making for dinner may tend to fall on the heavier side – because I’m only eating a small portion of it paired with some really good-for-you veggies.
Here are a few examples of what my plate usually looks like:
1/2 fruits and veggies – 1/4 lean turkey – 1/4 whole wheat high fiber tortilla
1/2 stir fried veggies – 1/4 chicken – 1/4 brown rice
1/2 asparagus, 1/4 chicken/onions/peppers/spinach, 1/4 whole wheat high fiber tortilla
1/2 broccoli -1/4 aloha chicken – 1/4 brown rice
1/2 lettuce and other veggies – 1/4 ground turkey – 1/4 baked corn tortilla
1/2 fruits and veggies – 1/4 chopped baked chicken – 1/4 homemade dinner roll
So in honor of St. Patrick’s Day I want to challenge you to look at your plate, think about what you are putting in your mouth, and try to add a little more {GREEN} – in terms of veggies – to your dinner plate!
That way you don’t have to feel guilty about indulging in this every once in awhile :)
