{ruffled flour sack dishtowels}

I have been wanting to make these dishtowels since last Christmas, and I finally had time this afternoon! Thank goodness for napping babies, and girlies that are happy to watch a movie for a little bit.

You may know that sewing is not my forte. I am always envious of all the fabulous sewing projects I see, and it’s my goal next year to work on getting better. In the meantime, anything I sew is simple and easy, and takes less than an hour. These dishtowels are no exception! I love love love how they turned out! You can make these too—it really is easy (and I wouldn’t say it if I didn’t mean it), and anyone can do it.

You can make them anyway you like, which is the beauty of it. How darling would they be in Halloween fabric? You can also put any text you like, or monograms are always cute. Flour sack dishtowels are my favorite, and lend a very homey look. How perfect for gifts!!

Ruffled Dishtowels

ITEMS YOU NEED:

  • flour sack dishtowels
  • fabric
  • heat ‘n bond

DIRECTIONS:

1. Iron your dishtowels.

2. Cut your fabric into 1 1/2 – 2 inch strips, across the whole width of your fabric. (Usually 45-54 inches wide.) I like the frayed look, so I did not hem my strips before sewing ruffles. You can always add this step in if you prefer.

3. Sew first ruffle on the very bottom of your dish towel. Add the second ruffle, leaving about 1/2 inch gap between the first one. The third ruffle will go in that 1/2 inch gap, giving it a more ruffle-y appearance. My ruffles are super easy–just take your strip and fold it over and under as you go along. The dishtowels are wide enough that one strip of fabric is not going to be long enough, but these ruffles are the kind that will hide adding an extra strip easily. When you get to the end of your strip, just fold the rough side under. Fold the rough side of the new strip over, and sew them on overlapping them just a little. It will look just like another ruffle!

Sewing ruffles:

Adding the second/third strip of fabric:

4. Add text or monograms with heat ‘n bond, according to package directions.

You now have darling ruffled dishtowels!!

I can’t believe there are only 11 more days until Christmas!

Gosh did you just say 11 days???? EEK! My hubby's side of the family is doing Christmas this weekend — double EEK! SOOOOO not ready. And the car guys called about what was wrong with my car…$1300 worth. Are you serious? But seriously I think I need to do this dish towel. Making something so simple and pretty always makes me feel better! :) Thank you for a feel better craft.

So so cute! I am going to make some. How did you do the lettering? Where did you get the towels from?

    Thank you

    Emily—

I did the lettering using heat 'n bond, which you can buy at your local sewing store, like Joann's. You basically print out the text you want in the size you want, then cut them out. The rest of the directions are on the heat 'n bond package.

I bought the flour sack towels at Walmart. They came in a pack of 5, for around $5. You can also buy them at Target, or similar store.

Good luck! Let me know if you have any other questions!

They turned out super precious…I may have to make one {or some} over Christmas break for everyday. I always like to have something new to put out once the Christmas decor is packed away…just so my home doesn't feel so naked ;) lol!
