Homemade Easter grass is a fun variation that’s inexpensive and adorable!

Plastic grass is really cheap, I know, but homemade grass is so much cuter! :)

All you need is: (**these are affiliate links**)

shredder

cardstock

I like using the textured Bazzil cardstock, which is a little thicker, but you can use any kind you like. I also recommend using solid colors–a pattern will most likely be unrecognizable once shredded.

Empty out your shredder, then run one color of cardstock through at a time. I used 3 sheets of 12×12 paper per color, and it made enough to fill two pails to the halfway point. Once one color is done, remove the pieces, then do the next color. Store in plastic storage bags until ready to use!

When I first thought of this, I imagined long thin strips of paper. Then I remembered that our shredder cross cuts the paper, leaving me with little pieces, as opposed to strips. My husband offered to take it to work to do it, but I was too impatient. :) I still really like the way it turned out, so whichever kind of shredder you have, it will be cute!

It doesn’t take long at all–just a few minutes for each color.  I love how it looks, and you can make ANY color you like! It’s also easy to save from year-to-year, just tuck them away (by color) in a gallon ziploc bag.

  1. This did turn out super cute! I bet it is easier to clean up too because the plastic Easter grass clings to everything and is such a pain to pick up.

  2. And it’s recyclable or compostable, that’s always been my complaint about the plastic grass, you just can’t do anything with it.

  3. I like this idea. My cats eat the plastic “grass” and then we get to clean it up later. (Gross cats). I bet they won’t try to eat this!

  4. I like the idea if you’re looking for certain colors, I just buy mine at Target, it’s cheap and some have the mixed colors of the.paper!! Good.point though, not only is.plastic messy and seems to stick everywhere, paper is better, children and cats, Veterinarians say because especially cats who like to eat the grass, can get the plastic caught in their throats and choke to death….
