Instead of a formal living room, I use that space in our house for a Music Room & Library. It gets a lot of use with five kids in music lessons, and some of them playing more than one instrument. I’ve also always wanted a library, with floor to ceiling bookshelves and a comfy chair–someplace where we could go and curl up to read. While I have a few more things on my list to do, I got a great start on this space this past week, and I’m loving it! I was basically starting from scratch, and now it’s really starting to take shape, thanks to a few new key pieces. I’m excited to share the Before & After Farmhouse Style Music Room & Library!
Here’s how it looked before…
And the after!
What a difference! I started by moving the piano to the opposite wall, because you can see that wall from the front door. When you walk in our front door into the entry, I have barn doors leading to rooms on both sides, and this room is to the left. Eventually the plan is to have floor to ceiling bookcases where the single bookcase is now, and hopefully that will be a fall/winter project! I also want to put shiplap on the wall behind the piano–I think it would be perfect there.

I LOVE LOVE the new chair I got by Better Homes & Gardens at Walmart. It comes in two different colors, the other being a really lovely gray, but I wanted to keep this room more neutral in color, so I went with the cream, and it’s perfect. I love sitting there to listen as my kids’ practice, or when I want to read a book and look out the front window. The detailing is perfection–I love the tufts on the back of the chair, and the brass nailhead trim along the rolled arms.
I painted the piano stool black, for a little contrast, and added a few more details, like the olive bucket of hydrangeas, the giant clock, and the super cute farmhouse style lamp.
My cute hubby surprised me and whipped up the blanket ladder next to the bookcase (tutorial coming soon), and it adds just the right touch to that corner. The bookcase holds all of the piano and music books (the basket on the left holds all of their current books, making them easy to find), my Chatbooks, and a few books that I grabbed out of storage. I have boxes and boxes of books just waiting for the bookshelves we are going to build!
On the other wall, next to the window, I had that giant white armoire. It had worked perfectly in our other houses in different rooms, but it just didn’t work in this spot. It was too big for the space, and totally overwhelmed the corner. I found the perfect solution, this adorable Modern Farmhouse Storage Cabinet. I needed something like the armoire, because that’s where we keep all of the violins and violin equipment. I like being able to keep it out of sight, but have it handy, and this was just the thing. The door slides back and forth, and covers just one side at a time. On the other side, I filled the spaces with these adorable striped fabric bins. They’re not only great storage, but add so much style to the room! I hung white sheer curtains on the window, they’re just what I was looking for–they let in a ton of light into the room, and since I have blinds, I didn’t need them for privacy.
I absolutely love it, and it’s now one of my favorite spaces!
