Binders were on the school supply list for my girls this year, and I thought it would be fun to “cutesy” them up a little bit before the first day of school.  It took just a few minutes to change a plain binder into an adorable and practical one, by adding chalkboard binder labels!

This was SO SO simple!

-I cut a piece of polka dot scrapbook paper down to fit the binder, and slid it into the clear pocket.

-I used my Silhouette to cut out cute labels from chalkboard vinyl and placed it on the front of the binder.  (You could also do this on the spine, to be seen from the side as well.)

-If you don’t have a Silhouette, you could also tape off a section on the front of the binder using painters tape, then apply a chalkboard craft paint with a foam brush and let dry.  You could also use a stencil (either cut out with a Silhouette or purchased) of a fancier label, instead of the painters tape, and still use the craft paint.

Seriously, that’s it!

My girls binders’ will have a lot of subjects in one, so I’m going to write their names on their labels.  If you have a child with several binders, this is a fun way to label them with the different subjects, and help keep them organized! You could also add the chalkboard paint/vinyl to the spine, so that it could be seen from the side, like in a locker or on a shelf.

This doesn’t have to be just for back to school, though.  Whether you’re using a binder for recipes, information, home & family, work, school, in the classroom, as a journal, or other organization, these simple labels are a charming addition that’s EASY to change whenever you need to!

  1. You are so speaking my language Kierste! Have you seen my binders lately? I’m on a ridiculous binder kick. So perfect timing!! These are adorable.

  2. I love the look of this, so simple, yet so fun! I bet the kids will love it!

    1. My girls do love it–they wanted names on their binders, and this was an easy way to do it!!

  3. If you were going to purchase a Silhouette, which one would you purchase and what additions would you purchase with it or make sure are included with it?

    1. I would purchase the Cameo, if it fits into your budget! I like the 12 inch cutting capability, which is the main difference between the Portrait and Cameo. You’ll also need a 12×12 cutting mat. I LOVE the Designer Edition Software–it’s worth the purchase in my mind. If you’re going to cut vinyl, then I would get the vinyl hook–it makes getting little tiny pieces out so much easier! Then…I would buy a few products to start with–the ones you are most interested in. Basic vinyl colors, etc. Let me know if you have any more questions!!! Have fun!! xo

      1. Thanks! So, it doesn’t come with a cutting mat then? Thanks so much for the help! I was a tad confused as to the difference between the two. You made it clear. Great! :)

        1. Actually, it does come with a cutting mat, sorry! Here’s everything it comes with:

          Silhouette CAMEO® electronic cutting machine
          Silhouette Studio® software
          51 exclusive cuttable designs
          Power cable, USB cable
          12″ cutting mat
          Cutting blade
$10 gift card to the Silhouette Online Store
          Basic Instruction Guide

          So glad it helped!! xo

          1. So the main extra that I need is the Designer Edition Software then? This is wonderful! Thank you so much for you help! :)

  4. I’m a Silhouette fanatic, too! And this only furthers the point that I need to invest in some chalkboard vinyl. Adding it to my ever-growing Silhouette shopping list.
