At Home Teeth Whitening: Does it Work?

Thanks to Smile Brilliant for sponsoring this post. I was provided with their Smile Brilliant Teeth Whitening System and offered an extra kit to giveaway in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are 100% mine.

A couple of months ago, Smile Brilliant reached out to me and asked if I would be willing to give their home whitening kit a try. Normally that’s not something I would post about, but I have to admit, I was intrigued. I have long wanted to whiten my teeth. Despite not drinking Diet Coke, alcohol, or coffee (common contributors to yellowing teeth), mine were definitely not as white as I wanted them to be. I have tried a couple of things that didn’t work like I wanted them to. So…when Smile Brilliant approached me, I decided to give it a shot.

At Home Teeth Whitening: How it Works

It didn’t take too long to receive my kit. It contained tubes of whitening gel, desensitizing gel, plenty of step-by-step instructions, and items to make a mold of my teeth for custom whitening trays.

At first I was nervous to make the molds. The instructions were clear, but I was worried about user error! But it actually turned out to be much easier than I thought. You just combine the base and the catalyst together–it’s like working with play dough–then smoosh it in to the molds they send. The tricky part was biting down into the mold to make teeth imprints, but after reading through the instructions a couple of times, I felt more confident. Plus, they also include an extra set, just in case you mess up, which made me feel better.

Once I finished my making my molds, I just popped them in the provided postage paid envelope and sent them off. Within a week I had received my very own custom whitening trays, and I was ready to get started!!

It was a very simple process, but did require a daily time commitment for a couple of weeks. You first brush your teeth with water only, put a thin ribbon of the whitening gel in each tray, make sure your teeth are dry, then put in the trays. Begin whitening for 45 minutes at a time, and if you aren’t experiencing any sensitivity, you can up it to 3 hours.

Teeth whitening for sensitive teeth too!

(One little trick to avoid sensitivity is to rub a little Vaseline on your gums before apply the whitening trays. I found that I didn’t experience any, and didn’t have to do it. ) If you have sensitive teeth, no worries…they have options just for you. Just let them know when you order!

After whitening, brush your teeth like normal, and rinse out your mouth. The next step is to rinse and dry your trays, then add desensitizing gel into them, and reapply the trays for 15 minutes. When you remove the trays this time, you don’t need to rinse. In fact, you shouldn’t eat or drink for 30 minutes, and it’s suggested to do it at night for this reason- It’s best to do this entire process every day or every other day for as may sessions as you need–which depends on your teeth.

All in all, I found it to be an easy and successful experience. I’m a busy mom, and at first I wasn’t sure if I’d have time to fit it in, but I made it work. Sometimes I did it in the morning, and other days it had to be in the evening. After about 10 sessions, I feel like my teeth are starting to show improvement. I think mine are extra stubborn, but I can really see the difference.

My at home teething whitening results:

The picture on the left is the before, and the one on the right is after. Pictures don’t quite do it justice–I’m so happy with the results! I’ve used the strips before, and they didn’t do anything for my teeth. This system is definitely less expensive than the dentist, and once you have your trays, you can always order more gel if you want to do more whitening. This is the first product I’ve tried that has even touched it, so it’s a success in my book.

And guess what? I’m so excited that Smile Brilliant is offering a 15% discount to my readers using the code oldsaltfarm15 AND one of you can win a full kit! (Open to US, UK, Canada, and Australia only) The retail value of this kit is $149.00!
